Police say that solving a murder is like putting together a giant jigsaw puzzle. In Grave Mysteries, we recount some of our nation’s most bewildering murder investigations, following investigators as they solve the case, piece by piece. This often begins with reconstructing the life of the victim, and piecing together the victim’s world – their friends, family and relationships. Police start by studying all the clues left behind – from hidden Facebook threads to saved Google searches to discarded ticket stubs to secret diaries. Only by delving into the victim’s digital past – their social media, selfie pictures and video, call records and texts, can investigators examine the victim’s life… and follow the trail to catch the killer.
Every new piece of the puzzle seems to send the investigation into surprising new directions. Sometimes, new pieces of the puzzle seem to confuse the picture – but in the end, one crucial piece is found that allows us to reconstruct the murder from beginning to end. At last, the picture is complete. With a clear-eyed view of what happened, the police are able to uncover the culprit and the shocking truth.
